SERGE DOCEUL
Serge DOCEUL was born in the Brittany region ofFrance. At a young age, during family outings, he fell in love with the region, its beaches, the ocean, and the area’s truly enchanting natural environment.Even as a child, he felt the urge to capture these unique moments heexperienced.
Serge started studying painting at the age of 12.Through drawings, engravings, water colors, and theatrical scenery he expressedhis creativity. Although Serge studied math and physics in college, he decidedin the end to focus on his passion.
In 1979 he started to devote his time almost entirelyto oil painting technique. The process Serge uses to capture what he wants topaint has not changed since childhood. He always carries a notebook with himand as soon as he sees a captivating landscape, he sketches it in his notebook.Afterwards he also often takes a snapshot with his camera.
Next, the day after Serge sketches and photographs alandscape, he works for several days in his studio until he successfully paintsa perfect representation of his vision of the landscape.
Most of the time he works with a palette knife, a toolthat artists typically use to mix colors into a paste (oil, acrylic) on theirpalette.
Serge’s painting instructor quickly identified hisincredible talent, and invited the young painter to work with him. Together thetwo artists participated in several very successful expositions.
Serge went out on his own after finishing his studies, focusing on countryside and coastal landscapes, as well as fantasy paintings. He paints storms, flowered landscapes, or country roads in the fall dependingon the season. The themes of his works are cyclical and depend on the time ofyear or season in the region. He does not take requests, using his keeninstinct to work on what nature is willing to offer at a given time.
His works have been presented at internationalexpositions, in the USA, in embassies, in Germany, as well as in London withthe Royal Society of Marine Artists.
His studio is located in the Brittany region ofnorthwestern France, a coastal region where the ocean, forests, and locallegends feed his inspiration.
Over the course of his career, Serge Doceul hasreceived several honors and awards, including:
- The “pinceaud’or” (golden paintbrush) in Saint Sébastien sur Loire in 1991,
- Firstprize at Bressuire Castle in 1992,

”When Ipaint it’s instinctive, I let my hands do the speaking. Only when I’ve finisheddo I take the time to look at my paintings. I see a lot of beauty, light, anddepth. I am often surprised to discover or rediscover certain aspects. This iswhy keep some of my works for a long time before I’m ready to let them go. Ireally enjoy taking the time to look at them; it’s as if the landscapes comealive. It sometimes feels like the waves are moving, like the wind is blowingacross my face. What a truly incredible sensation. ”
