BERNARD THIEBAUT
As a child, Bernard THIEBAUT liked to observe the wild flora and fauna around his home. While his classmates played football, he spent time listening to the birds sing, feeling the wind blow across his face, and watching the trees sway back and forth. It was only natural that he started painting at a young age. Year after year he perfected his art.
In 1963, he passed the entrance exam to France’s prestigious “Ecole des Beaux Arts” (National School of Fine Arts) in Paris and held his first exposition just a year later in 1964.
Bernard settled down in Paris after finishing his studies and quickly enjoyed success, holding expositions all over France.
In 1997, he moved to the medieval village of Castellet (in the south of France) and took a keen interest in the unique colors of Provence. This interest transformed into a lifelong passion and over time he became one of the few painters to truly capture the essence of this wonderful region, considered one of the most beautiful in France.
The legendary French author Frédéric Mistral (1830-1914) said that, “When God begins to have doubts about the world he remembers that he created Provence.” Provence is synonymous with culture, tradition, coarse rock, and foggy winters. The soul of Provence is a journey within. It entices you turn your gaze to the mountains and contemplate the fortified villages perched on high so as to understand the true extent to which these coveted lands managed to resist. This is the primary motivation that pushed Bernard THIEBAUT to move to the region. Each one of his paintings serves as a declaration of his love for Provence and this part of France.
Bernard THIEBAUT has been painting for more than 60 years. His masterful glazing technique on linen canvases highlights Provence’s incredible beauty.
Thanks to his many admirers and collectors throughout the world, his works have traveled well beyond France’s borders.
Having a Bernard THIEBAUT painting in your apartment is like having a piece of France in your home. It feels like a trip to France every time I stare at his paintings.
